Abingdon Colts vs Oxford Colts
First home match for Abingdon Colts
With the Abingdon squad reduced by a number of absences, the game began as 13 a side. In the opening minutes Abingdon attacked strongly and managed to advance as far as a penalty 10 metres from the Oxford line. Unfortunately, the ball was turned over and it was Oxford who, after a number of phases, opened the scoring. As the half continued the pattern repeated, with Abingdon turnovers and errors allowing Oxford's strong runners to breakaway and add to the score. When Abingdon were able to control possession however, we were able to generate good continuity with some excellent handling and put real pressure on Oxford, without quite managing to score. Finally, almost at the end of the half, Abingdon were able to string together enough phases to stretch the Oxford defense sufficiently for Liam to score out wide.
In the second half Abingdon were more competitive, but as we tired, Oxford added several more tries. In the last quarter the game became a little fractious and there were two yellow cards for Oxford players . Curtis also received a yellow for an early tackle. Credit to Abingdon as our heads never dropped, and although tired, we finished the game strongly. There is plenty of potential in all our players, but we do need to work on playing in a more coordinated way as a team. This will come with continued and intensified commitment at training.
