The RFU continues to provide support for older teams and players involved in veterans (over-35s) and Golden Oldies (over-50s) rugby, the ultimate aim being to help recruit new or lapsed players and to retain existing ones.
Veterans rugby is becoming increasingly popular with middle-aged players looking to reacquaint themselves with the game after taking time out to develop their careers and to bring up families. A new fan base has also emerged recently in the army of mini/junior rugby dads, who have been introduced to the game through watching, supporting and coaching their youngsters.
Dedicated veterans leagues play all across the UK and Europe. Golden Oldies matches are usually played either at the start or the end of the rugby season. Friendship and fun are understandably the key objectives and contact is kept to a minimum. The main interest of the RFU is in helping to promote local community grassroots at Golden Oldies events and festivals.
