U17 Still top!!!

2 Feb 2012.

Having played all their games, Abingdon U17 now have to wait for the other teams to finish off the league section.  Reading Abbey were beaten 24-10 at the weekend by Milton Keynes, with Oxford beating Bletchley.  Reading can no longer win this league. Milton Keynes can still come second but need to win their last game against Oxford on the 12th Feb.  Oxford are the only possible challengers with two games to play against Bracknell and MK - both tough games as each team can still come second in the league.  As a further complication, as Abs beat Oxford, so Oxford need to get a bonus point AND win both games to overhaul Abs. A tall order indeed.....Cool

Fingers crossed for Abs.

Seniors Players Needed for 1xv and 2xv teams

Abingdon Rugby Club run two Senior teams in the Berks Bucks & Oxon Championship and Div 4. Our squads, particularly of front row forwards, are looking a bit thin on the ground at the moment and we are looking for players of all abilities. But wherever you play and whatever standard you are, you will get plenty of game time.

So, if you are aged between 17-70 and you have played a lot, a little or even never played rugby before and would like to give it a shot then please contact us. We train at the club on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7.30pm, and play the league and friendly games on Saturday, usually kicking off at 3pm

Of course it’s not just the rugby, we also have a great clubatmosphere with a great bunch of blokes (and some girls too).

So come on, what are you waiting for? Why spend your Saturdays shopping with the misses, or doing some DIY when you could spend it keeping/getting fit, being part of an Abingdon team and having a few after match beers with a great bunch of lads.

Minis Fixtures for 2011/12 have been announced

The Minis Fixtures for the 2011/12 season have now been added to the website.

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING - Saturday 16th April 2011

The AGM of the club will take place at 6pm on Saturday 16th April 2011. All paid up club members are welcome. If there is anything that you think could help to smooth the running of the club come and have your say at the AGM. Even better, volunteer to fill one of the positions on the Committee and help those of us who seem to have been doing it all for years! There should be a notice on the board for nominations - if it isn't there then ask our Secretary - Simon North - why not?

CLUB DINNER - FRIDAY 13th MAY 2011

The club dinner, which is always an enjoyable and good value event, will take place on Friday 13th May 2011. Tickets are £25 each and can be purchased from either Martin Davies or Jim Crossland on any Saturday at the club. If you want to come but can't get to the club on a Saturday (shame on you!), send me an e-mail via 2nd team contact above.

(Please note that this is a stag only evening).

Senior Club Tour 2011

29th April 2011 - 2nd May 2011 - Antwerp - £300

The senior tour is now confirmed as going ahead and has currently been booked for the minimum number of 26 persons allowed by the tour company. Places are almost all taken and if you want to join the tour you will have to get your skates on and contact the Tour Chairman, Kelvin Sykes, and pay your minimum deposit of £50. There is a possibility of adding extra numbers to the tour, but this is dependent on rooms being available in the hotel so you need to confirm as soon as you can. If you leave it too long you may find yourself disappointed. £150 due by end of January and balance due by end of February - if this will cause you cash flow problems speak to Kelvin as he may be able to help.

The tour will be by coach and ferry to Antwerp. The total cost will be £300 which covers coach, ferry, hotel on B & B basis for three nights, insurance, tour hat, tour tie and tour shirt. Pretty good value!

We will leave from Abingdon RFC after midnight on the night of Thursday 28th April, which saves us the considerable extra cost of coach hire and driver's wages for a full day. We will return on Monday 2nd May, arriving in Abingdon mid-evening thereby again saving a whole day's coach and driver costs. For those that haven't noticed, both the Friday and the Monday are bank holidays this year due to a wedding taking place on the Friday. Come on tour and miss all the media hype that will be inevitable!

Two fixtures are being arranged against local opposition - Friday evening and Sunday afternoon - and these have always proved to be memorable for a number of different reasons.

The tour is open to all - you don't have to be a club member to join us. If you have never been on on of TCs senior tours you don't know what you have been missing. Come and join us this year and you will have memories that you will be able to reminisce over with fellow tourists for many years to come.

I can be contacted via the 2nd XV e-mail address on this website, or at the club around 12 to 1pm on a Saturday depending on whether the Second XV is playing home or away. Don't leave it too late because you will regret it.

Cheers,

Kelvin (To be known as TC from now on - especially by tourists!)

Paul Murphy to be RFU president

Abingdon RFC president Paul Murphy will become only the second Oxfordshire representative to take up the Rugby Football Union’s (RFU) top job.

Murphy has been nominated as RFU junior vice president for the 2010-11 season, a post that leads to him being installed as president in 2012.

His recommendation was approved by the RFU council on April 16 and goes to their AGM on July 4.

Oxfordshire’s only previous RFU president was Geoffrey Butler in 1963-64, while Murphy took over from Stanley Oswin as Oxon’s RFU representative in 1995, Murphy said: “It is a great personal honour to be recommended, but also an honour for Oxfordshire and my club Abingdon.

“Over many years I have received fantastic support from the clubs in Oxfordshire, the county committee, my employer Unipart Automotive, and of course, my family.

“I look forward to operating in a presidential team with Richard Appleby and Willie Wildash, bringing my experience to join their own in leading and representing the RFU and game in England.”

Murphy’s recommendation states: “His six years service on the management board together with his unstinting contribution during 15 years on council across a wide range of sectors within the game makes him an exceptional candidate who clearly satisfies the criteria.”

Abingdon RFC chairman Stephen Akid said: “The club are very proud of Paul’s achievement. It is well deserved recognition for his hard work for the game both locally and nationally”

Colin Baldwin, Oxfordshire RFU president and chairman, said “It is a worthy acknowledgement of Paul’s hard work for the game over many years.

“The county congratulate him in becoming junior vice president.”

Murphy will become RFU senior vice president in 2011-12 before taking up the top post in a season, which includes the 2012 Olympics in London.

Things i have added are:

Team pages - Each page now has match reports, team news/information and next fixture plus all the team information.
Latest events and latest news.
I still have lots to do but the site should be live prior to the Abingdon 7's tournament.

Plus much much more.....

RFU Grand draw 2009/2010

Hello all players, members and parents

As a club, we have registered with the RFU to take part in their Grand draw. The financial outlay from the club to take part in this draw is zero as all tickets and prizes are sponsored by the RFU and other central bodies. All we have to do is sell as many draw tickets as possible and return just 10% of takings with stubs to the RFU . This has to be one of the best opportunities there can be to raise funds for the club as it is all done for us. Please try hard to sell your 2 raffle books to friends, family, business associates etc

EVERY £1 TICKET SOLD  IS 90p TO THE CLUB.

The monies raised this year will go towards  improving the clubs furniture and general seating and If any left over, improve heating in the club. This will benefit all club users so please try as hard as you can. If we all sell our 2 books, we will raise £3150 but there is no limit so if you want more to sell, please request them through your age group coach. Deadline for sales is mid February so there is plenty of time. Please return monies and stubs to your coach.

Many thanks- Martin Tinson – On behalf of Abingdon Rugby Club.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The tickets will be handed out by me to your coach at Monday nights committee meeting. If you require more tickets to sell, please contact your coach or myself on 07525975174. As i have said this is one of the best and easiest ways to raise funds for the club so please get involved and sell your raffle tickets.

Please see posters in club house for the full listing of draw prizes or go to RFU grand draw.com for more detail.

IT BENEFITS THE WHOLE CLUB.....
